چکیده

• GWS recovery was observed by 617 monitoring wells in NCP after MRP operation. GRACE detected similar patterns of depletion and with wells. Pumping decrease precipitation increase jointly drove recovery. The South-to-North water diversion Middle Route Project (MRP) is expected to alleviate the long-term groundwater storage (GWS) North China Plain (NCP) beginning its operation December 2014. This study aims investigate effect on comparing changes before (2003–2014) (2015–2018) analysis conducted using level data from NCP, then evaluated against satellite-based Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) Follow-On missions. On average a decreasing trend ?19.1 ± 5.1 mm/yr seen based well observations during 2003–2014, but +1.8 0.7 found 2015–2018. most prominent subregions where over-utilization had occurred NCP. exhibited capacity detect regional difficult distinguish sub-regional potential causes for were be complicated, not only caused reduction pumping as accelerated MRP-diverted water, also increasing recharge aquifers enhanced management system. findings highlight that has started gradual transition unsustainable benefit diversion.

Balancing Rural Household Livelihood and Regional Ecological Footprint in Water Source Areas of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

There is a knowledge gap and practical demand to understand the co-evolutionary relationship between rural household livelihood and regional ecological footprints for developing sustainable livelihoods in ecological conservation regions. This paper tracks the change trajectories of rural household livelihoods and regional ecological footprints in four water source areas of the South-to-North Wa...

Vertical Displacements Driven by Groundwater Storage Changes in the North China Plain Detected by GPS Observations

The North China Plain (NCP) has been experiencing the most severe groundwater depletion in China, leading to a broad region of vertical motions of the Earth’s surface. This paper explores the seasonal and linear trend variations of surface vertical displacements caused by the groundwater changes in NCP from 2009 to 2013 using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Expe...

Water use patterns of forage cultivars in the North China Plain

Water shortage is the primary limiting factor for crop production and long-term agricultural sustainability of the North China Plain. Forage cultivation emerged recently in this region. A fiver-year field experiment studies were conducted at Yucheng Integrated Experiment Station to quantify the water requirement and water use efficiency of seven forage varieties under climate variability, that ...

Application of MODFLOW and geographic information system to groundwater flow simulation in North China Plain, China

MODFLOW is a groundwater modeling program. It can be compiled and remedied according to the practical applications. Because of its structure and fixed data format, MODFLOW can be integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for water resource management. The North China Plain (NCP), which is the politic, economic and cultural center of China, is facing with water resources sh...

Simulation of groundwater dynamics in the North China Plain by coupled hydrology and agricultural models

We simulated the effects of irrigation on groundwater flow dynamics in the North China Plain by coupling the NIES Integrated Catchment-based Ecohydrology (NICE) model with DSSAT-wheat and DSSAT-maize, two agricultural models. This combined model (NICE-AGR) was applied to the Hai River catchment and the lower reach of the Yellow River (530 km wide by 840 km long) at a resolution of 5 km. It repr...
